Often when I set up a Facebook fan page for businesses they don't necessarily have the time to monitor the page regularly for fan activity. Notifications of fan posts and comments and being able to know when they happen without being in Facebook 24/7 is the major concern.

Lots of great changes have made it easier to use Facebook events. Fewer fields are required to create an event. You now also have the option to create and event without a location and allow anyone who joins to set the location later on. There's now a friends privacy option (between public and invite-only). And there's new support for time zones.

Post in the form of a question. A good idea is to make it an open-ended question, such as a fill in the blank. Remember Facebook is about communicating with your fans. You have two ears and one mouth so you should listen twice as much as you talk.
